Sleep-related breathing disorders are diseases in which unhealthy breathing behaviour occurs during sleep. The two main forms are obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and central sleep apnoea (CSA).
While OSA typically leads to airway obstructions that prevent air from reaching the lungs or only reach them insufficiently, CSA is a disorder of respiratory regulation in the central nervous system. A prolonged lack of oxygen during sleep can lead to a slowly progressive cognitive decline.
A sleep position trainer is part of sleep therapy, especially if those affected suffer from sleep disorders that are exacerbated by a certain sleeping position, such as obstructive sleep apnoea or snoring in a supine position. BluBuz encourages the user to switch to a lateral position without interrupting sleep in order to reduce or eliminate the symptoms.
If a sleep position trainer alone is not sufficient to treat all types of sleep disorders, the use of a sleep therapy device is beneficial to health.
Types of sleep therapy devices:
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP):
Generate a constant positive pressure that is applied to the patient through a mask to keep the airways open. This allows breathing air to flow back into the lungs, reducing snoring and daytime sleepiness or, in the best case, eliminating them completely.
AutoCPAP (auto-adjusting CPAP):
Automatically adjusts the applied pressure to individual circumstances, such as changes in sleeping position during the night, by continuously monitoring and regulating the pressure during sleep (also APAP).
BiLevel:
Particularly suitable for central sleep apnoea problems, these devices offer two separate pressure levels: a higher pressure during inhalation and a lower pressure during exhalation, to ensure gas exchange without respiratory drive.
Auto-BiLevel:
These devices combine the advantages of BiLevel and APAP therapies by allowing individual adjustment of the pressure during both inhalation and exhalation.
